Odisha, or ancient Kalinga, has played a significant role in the cultural landscape of Indian civilization, attracting scholars, artists, and tourists throughout history. The state has been home to numerous luminaries who have made profound contributions to various fields, enriching the cultural heritage of India.
Kantakabi Lakshmikanta Mohapatra, born in Cuttack in 1888, was a prolific writer and poet known for his literary contributions to Odia literature. Despite facing the adversity of leprosy, he continued to pursue his creative endeavors and became known as Kantakabi, the poet of satire. His patriotic songs during the freedom movement, along with his parodies and literary works, left an indelible mark on Odia literature and society.
Kelucharan Mohapatra, born in Puri in 1926, is revered as the father of Odissi dance. Establishing himself as a dancer and choreographer, Guruji developed a distinct style of Odissi dance, which became recognized as one of India’s classical dances. His tireless efforts to popularize Odissi dance globally, along with his establishment of Srjan in Bhubaneswar, have ensured the preservation and propagation of this art form for future generations.
Parbati Ghose, also known as Chapala and Chandana, was a legendary figure in the Odia film industry. Born in Cuttack in 1942, she received training in dance from renowned gurus and went on to become a prominent actress in Odia cinema. Her versatility and talent were showcased in various critically acclaimed films, earning her accolades and establishing her as a stalwart of Odia cinema.
Akshya Kumar Mohanty, born in 1937, was a multifaceted artist known for his contributions to Odia music, literature, and cinema. As a prolific music director, singer, and lyricist, he created timeless melodies that captured the essence of Odisha’s culture and heritage. His literary works, including songs, short stories, novels, and an autobiography, continue to resonate with audiences, reflecting the depth and richness of Odia language and culture.
