Historical Background

Raj Bhavan Uttar Pradesh, the official residence of the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, is one of the most magnificent and historic landmarks of Lucknow. Built in 1798 by the French architect Claude Martin, it was originally called “Kothi Hayat Baksh” (Abode of Gift of Life).
During the colonial era, it served as the residence of the British Governors of the United Provinces, and after India’s Independence in 1947, it became the Raj Bhavan, continuing as the centre of governance and state ceremonial functions.

Architectural Grandeur

The Raj Bhavan is a double-storey Indo-European structure that beautifully blends elegance with tradition. It features:

  • High verandas and lofty ceilings that keep the building airy and spacious.
  • Large porticos, meeting halls, and guest facilities, reflecting its administrative importance.
  • Gandhi Sabhagaar, adorned with flower motifs on the walls and ceilings, enhanced with golden-hued traditional paintings.
  • Kala Kaksh, which houses a selective collection of sculptures and monuments honouring great legends.

The sprawling campus covers 52 acres, enriched with lush gardens, fountains, colorful flowers, children’s Panchtantra fitness area, and chirping birds, creating an ambience of serenity and natural beauty.

Cultural and Political Significance

For over 225 years, Raj Bhavan has silently witnessed the history of Awadh unfold. It was both a symbol of British colonial authority and later, a stage for India’s freedom struggle, providing space for political dialogues, protests, and decisions that shaped the nation’s destiny.
Post-independence, Raj Bhavan has remained a centre of political and administrative decision-making, embodying both continuity and change in governance.

Legacy of Heritage

Raj Bhavan stands as a proud reminder of the architectural craftsmanship of its creators and the cultural richness of Uttar Pradesh. Its Indo-European design, combined with sprawling landscapes, makes it a jewel of Lucknow’s heritage.

Commemorative Stamp

On the occasion of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Department of Posts is proud to issue a Commemorative Postage Stamp on Raj Bhavan Uttar Pradesh—a historic and elegant edifice that continues to reflect the grandeur, resilience, and legacy of the state.
