Delhi, the historic city that has witnessed centuries of social and political upheaval, holds a special place in the annals of Indian history. From being fought over and defended to being razed and rebuilt, Delhi’s story is one of resilience and endurance. Over the centuries, it has been the seat of power for many monarchs and dynasties, each leaving its mark on the city’s landscape.
The city’s history is often narrated through the lens of the “seven cities of Delhi,” representing the successive waves of conquest and construction by various rulers. Despite the ravages of time, many magnificent monuments still stand as testaments to Delhi’s storied past.
The first city, Lal Kot, was established by the Tomar Rajput King Anangpal in the 11th century. Subsequent rulers, such as Prithviraj Chauhan and the Slave Kings, contributed to the city’s expansion and fortification. The iconic Qutab Minar, built by Qutbud-din Aibak, remains a symbol of Delhi’s imperial grandeur.
Throughout its history, Delhi has been continuously built and rebuilt, with the last major endeavor being the construction of New Delhi as the capital of independent India. Today, the city is preparing to host the IX Asian Games, continuing its tradition of transformation and renewal.
The infrastructure for the Asian Games includes modern sports facilities such as the National Stadium, the main athletic stadium, and an indoor stadium near Rajghat. These venues will host a range of events, from athletics to badminton and gymnastics.
In addition to sporting facilities, the Asian Games Village will provide accommodation and recreational amenities for thousands of athletes and officials. The village will feature open terraces, private gardens, and communal spaces, reflecting Delhi’s commitment to hospitality and inclusivity.
The IX Asian Games represent an opportunity for Delhi to showcase its rich heritage and modern capabilities on the international stage. The Indian Post and Telegraphs Department is honored to commemorate this event with a special postage stamp, celebrating Delhi’s role as the host city of the Asian Games.
