New Delhi is gearing up to host the IX Asian Games, scheduled to begin on 19th November 1982. The city is witnessing a flurry of construction activities to ensure the provision of top-notch facilities for hosting various events during the ASIAD, which promises to be one of the most spectacular events in the history of Asian sports.
The fourth stamp in the series of special stamps on the Asian Games showcases the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, which will serve as the venue for sports such as football and various athletic events. The stadium will be a focal point of attraction during the games, hosting not only colorful sports events but also the grand opening and closing ceremonies of the Asian Games.
Designed with aesthetics in mind, the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium will boast modern and sophisticated infrastructure, with a seating capacity of 75,000 comfortably accommodated in two tiers of stands. The stadium will feature an 8-lane track laid with Olymparene-78, a state-of-the-art synthetic track covering for athletic events.
All timing equipment at the stadium will be electronically controlled, ensuring the highest standards of judging in athletics. Additionally, photo-finishing cameras will be employed to uphold modern judging standards. The stadium will also house two giant scoreboards capable of displaying results simultaneously in Hindi and English.
Furthermore, the stadium will be floodlit to facilitate events at night and enable color TV transmission. The Main Press Center for the ASIAD will be located within the stadium premises, equipped with modern facilities to accommodate the world press and provide real-time results from all venues through an elaborate computerized Central Information System.
The press center will offer ample facilities for radio and TV transmissions directly from the stadium. The facilities created at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium will not only serve the needs of athletes and sports enthusiasts during the games but will also be available for future use by athletes, sportsmen, or trainees during coaching camps.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is poised to become a major landmark of New Delhi, symbolizing the city’s commitment to sports and athletic excellence. The Indian Posts & Telegraphs Department is honored to issue the fourth stamp on the IX Asian Games, celebrating the grandeur and significance of this monumental sporting event.
