Oil exploration in India has a rich history dating back to the late 19th century, but it wasn’t until after independence that a comprehensive exploration program was initiated. Early discoveries in Assam, such as at Makum and Digboi, laid the foundation for further exploration efforts. The establishment of Oil India Limited in partnership with the Burma Oil Company marked a significant milestone in India’s oil exploration journey.
Exploration efforts extended beyond Assam to regions like West Bengal, where collaboration with international companies like Standard Vacuum Oil Company of USA took place. The formation of the Oil & Natural Gas Commission (ONGC) in 1956 further bolstered exploration activities nationwide. ONGC’s discoveries at Cambay and Ankleshwar marked important milestones in India’s quest for self-sufficiency in oil production.
The discovery of Bombay High and subsequent development phases underscored India’s potential in offshore drilling. This development significantly boosted India’s oil production capacity, contributing to the nation’s industrial growth. ONGC’s efforts also facilitated the supply of crude oil and natural gas to various industries and regions across the country.
Over the years, India’s consumption of oil has increased steadily, necessitating continuous exploration and production efforts. With significant contributions from ONGC and Oil India, the country has been able to match a substantial portion of its oil consumption domestically. This progress brings India closer to achieving self-sufficiency in oil production, promising a bright future for the nation’s energy security.
In recognition of India’s achievements in oil exploration, the Indian Posts and Telegraphs Department is pleased to issue a special stamp commemorating this important aspect of the nation’s development.
