Calcutta’s Rich Historical and Cultural Heritage

Historical Significance:

  • Foundation and Growth: Calcutta, over 300 years old, is depicted vividly through sketches, lithographs, engravings, and paintings by artists from past eras.
  • Association with Ganga: The river Ganga is closely linked to Calcutta’s founding and its development into a significant shipping port in the Orient.

Artistic Contributions:

  • Sir Charles D’Oyly: Poet and artist, Sir Charles D’Oyly, spent 40 years in India (1798-1838) as a civil servant under the East India Company. His work “Views of Calcutta and its Environs,” published posthumously in 1848, includes a picturesque scene of the “Custom-House Wharf” on the Hooghly River.
  • Bishop Reginald Heber: In his journal, Bishop Heber noted the vibrant trade and commerce at the custom-house wharf, where ships of all descriptions crowded the quay.

The Victoria Memorial:

  • Concept and Construction: Conceived by Lord Curzon at the turn of the century, the Victoria Memorial was funded entirely by Indian subscriptions. Designed by Sir William Emerson in an Italian Renaissance style with oriental touches, the construction was managed by Martin & Co. of Calcutta.
  • Materials and Design: The marble was sourced from Makrana in Jodhpur, while the statues were crafted in Italy. The Memorial’s dimensions are 338’ X 228’ with a height of 184’, crowned by a bronze Angel of Victory.
  • Inauguration: The foundation stone was laid on January 4, 1906, by the Prince of Wales (later King George V). The Memorial opened to the public on December 28, 1921.
  • Collections and Illumination: The Victoria Memorial houses a vast collection of paintings, sculptures, and memorabilia of the Raj. Since January 1988, the monument has been illuminated, adding to its mystique.

Philatelic Celebration:

  • Sixth India National Philatelic Exhibition: To mark this event held in Calcutta, the Department of Posts issued a special stamp and a first day cover featuring significant landmarks of the city.

Design Credits:

  • Stamp and First Day Cover: The Department of Posts commissioned designs showcasing notable landmarks of Calcutta to commemorate the sixth India National Philatelic Exhibition.

This special issue not only celebrates Calcutta’s rich history and its contributions to trade and culture but also honors the city’s artistic and architectural heritage.
