The International Congress of Ophthalmology, which celebrated its centenary in 1958, is the oldest congress of specialists in the field of medical science globally. Originating in Brussels in 1857, the Congress has convened in various capitals across Europe, Egypt, the United States, and Canada in previous meetings. The XIX International Congress is set to convene in India, marking the first time it will be held in Asia. Hosted by the All-India Ophthalmological Society and under the patronage of the Government of India, this session will also include meetings of the International Association for the Prevention of Blindness and the International Organization against Trachoma.
The congress’s agenda encompasses discussions on specialist papers, a scientific exhibition showcasing ophthalmological instruments, equipment, and literature, as well as the screening of medical films. Scheduled from December 3 to 7, 1962, the session will draw nearly 2,000 distinguished ophthalmologists from around the world. This gathering is poised to catalyze advancements in ophthalmology in India and across Eastern countries.
In honor of this significant occasion, the Posts and Telegraphs Department is privileged to issue a postage stamp on December 3, commemorating the International Congress of Ophthalmology.
