Pioneers of Aviation in India

The story of Indian Women Aviators is one of courage, determination, and breaking barriers in a field that was once dominated by men. From the early days of aviation to commercial airlines, the armed forces, and space exploration, Indian women have achieved remarkable milestones.

Their journey reflects the growing role of women in shaping India’s aviation and aerospace history.

Early Women in Indian Aviation

When aviation was still in its infancy, only a few bold women entered the skies.

The first major milestone came in 1930, when Urmila K. Parekh became the first Indian woman to obtain a Pilot’s License.

Her achievement was celebrated in the July 1931 issue of Indian Aviation magazine, where she was recognized as the first Hindu woman to receive an air pilot’s license.

This marked the beginning of the inspiring legacy of Indian Women Aviators.

Major Milestones of Indian Women Aviators

After India gained independence, women entered aviation in greater numbers and achieved historic firsts.

1947 – First Woman Commercial Pilot

Prem Mathur became the first Indian woman to receive a Commercial Pilot’s License and to fly domestic airline services.

1956 – First Woman Pilot of Indian Airlines

Durba Banerjee became the first woman pilot of Indian Airlines, opening doors for future generations.

1985 & 1995 – Women Captain Leadership Milestones

Saudamini Deshmukh achieved global recognition:

  • 1985 – First captain in the world to command an all-women crew IATA scheduled flight on F-27
  • 1995 – First captain in Asia to fly an all-women crew on Airbus A-320

1995 – First All-Women Helicopter Crew (IAF)

Cheryl Dutta and Simran Sondhi became part of the first all-women helicopter crew in the Indian Air Force.

1997 – First Indian-born Woman Astronaut

Kalpana Chawla became the first Indian-born astronaut, inspiring millions in aviation and space science.

Indian Women Pilots’ Association (IWPA)

The Indian Women Pilots’ Association (IWPA) was established in 1967 to encourage networking, professional development, and the exchange of ideas among women pilots in India and internationally.

It was officially registered under the Societies Registration Act in 1984.

The IWPA became an important institution in advancing the cause of Indian Women Aviators.

Contributions of IWPA

The IWPA has played a major role in promoting aviation, especially for women, through several initiatives:

  • Scholarships for advanced flying training
  • Encouragement programs for school children
  • Trophies and awards for aviation excellence
  • Aviation seminars and workshops
  • Felicitation of outstanding women pilots from India and neighboring countries

These efforts helped inspire young women to pursue careers in aviation.

Aviation Heritage and Space Education

In 1997, with the efforts of IWPA, a permanent exhibition on India’s Aviation History and Space Technology was opened at the Pima Air & Space Museum.

In the same year, IWPA collaborated with Nehru Science Centre to launch a unique Aviation and Space Gallery in Mumbai.

These initiatives helped preserve India’s aviation heritage and inspire future generations.

Commemorative Stamp

To honor the contribution of Indian Women Aviators, the Department of Posts issued a special commemorative postage stamp dedicated to their achievements and the role of the Indian Women Pilots’ Association (IWPA).

Conclusion

The legacy of Indian Women Aviators is a story of pioneering spirit and excellence. From Urmila K. Parekh to Kalpana Chawla, Indian women have transformed aviation and aerospace through courage and achievement. Their journey continues to inspire future generations to dream beyond limits.
