Hero of the 1965 Indo-Pak War
Company Quartermaster Havildar Abdul Hamid is remembered as one of India’s greatest war heroes, known for his exceptional bravery during the 1965 Indo-Pakistan War. His fearless actions in the face of overwhelming odds remain a symbol of courage and patriotism.
Role of the Indian Armed Forces After Independence
After independence, the Indian Armed Forces were entrusted with defending the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. To honor acts of extraordinary bravery, the Government of India instituted gallantry awards, with the Param Vir Chakra being the highest recognition for valor.
Heroic Action in the Khem Karan Sector
During the 1965 war, Abdul Hamid served in the 4th Battalion of the Grenadiers, deployed in the Khem Karan sector. The Indian forces faced a massive attack from Pakistani forces equipped with advanced Patton tanks.
Displaying extraordinary courage, CQMH Abdul Hamid commanded a recoilless gun mounted on a jeep. With remarkable precision and bravery, he destroyed the leading enemy tank and then swiftly repositioned himself to knock out another tank.
Unmatched Bravery Against Heavy Odds
Despite intense enemy shelling and heavy tank fire, he continued to engage the advancing forces. His daring actions significantly disrupted the enemy’s offensive and inspired his fellow soldiers to fight back with determination, ultimately halting the tank assault.
In the midst of this fierce battle, Abdul Hamid made the supreme sacrifice for the nation.
Recognition and Legacy
For his extraordinary valor, indomitable spirit, and selfless sacrifice, Abdul Hamid was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra in 1966.
Commemoration
His legacy continues to inspire generations of Indians and members of the armed forces. To honor his heroism, a commemorative postage stamp was issued as part of the “50 Years of the Republic of India: Gallantry Award Winners” series, paying tribute to the courage and sacrifice of India’s brave soldiers.
