Hero of the 1971 Air Battle
Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon is remembered as one of the bravest warriors of the Indian Air Force, known for his extraordinary courage during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War. His heroic actions remain a shining example of dedication and sacrifice in the defence of the nation.
Role of the Indian Armed Forces After Independence
After independence, the Indian Armed Forces were entrusted with the vital responsibility of protecting the nation from external threats. From the very beginning, they displayed unmatched bravery in defending India’s borders, leading to the institution of gallantry awards such as the Param Vir Chakra, the country’s highest honor for valor.
Heroic Defence of Srinagar Air Base
In December 1971, during the Indo-Pakistan War, Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon was stationed at the Srinagar Air Base. On 14th December, the airfield came under sudden and intense attack from enemy aircraft.
Despite the danger, Sekhon executed a daring take-off while the runway was under attack. Fully aware of the overwhelming odds, he engaged the enemy in a fierce aerial combat at extremely low altitude, facing a six-to-one disadvantage.
Exceptional Courage in Combat
Displaying remarkable skill and fearlessness, he successfully shot down two enemy aircraft. However, the sheer numerical superiority of the opposing forces proved overwhelming. His aircraft was eventually hit, leading to a fatal crash.
Supreme Sacrifice and Recognition
For his unparalleled bravery, determination, and devotion to duty, Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra in 1972. He remains the only officer of the Indian Air Force to receive this prestigious honor.
Legacy and Commemoration
Sekhon’s sacrifice continues to inspire generations of Indians and members of the armed forces. His story symbolizes courage against impossible odds and unwavering commitment to the nation.
To honor such gallant heroes, a commemorative postage stamp was issued as part of the “50 Years of the Republic of India: Gallantry Award Winners” series, paying tribute to the valor and sacrifice of India’s finest soldiers.
