Saint, Poet, and Social Reformer of the Bhakti Movement
Sant Ravidas (circa 15th century AD) was one of the most influential figures of the Bhakti Movement. A great saint, philosopher, and social reformer, he championed the ideals of equality, devotion, and universal brotherhood.
He famously taught that a person’s worth is defined by actions, not by caste or creed, emphasizing the message: “Deeds, not birth, make a person high or low.”
Early Life and Spiritual Inclination
Born into a humble family of cobblers, Sant Ravidas showed strong spiritual tendencies from a very young age. Unlike other children, he had little interest in formal education, as he believed that true salvation could be achieved through devotion, love for God, and devotional singing.
Although his father encouraged him to join the family trade, Ravidas chose a different path. He often used his earnings to help the poor and needy, reflecting his compassion and selfless nature.
Life of Devotion and Service
Even after marriage, Sant Ravidas continued to live a simple life dedicated to spirituality and service. Living in a modest home, he devoted his time to worship, helping others, and spreading the message of divine love.
His teachings focused on devotion as the path to self-realization and liberation, and he worked to remove ignorance through knowledge and wisdom.
Struggle Against Social Inequality
At a time when caste discrimination was deeply rooted in society, Sant Ravidas faced strong opposition. Being born into a marginalized community, he was denied entry into temples.
Despite this, his unwavering faith gave him strength. He taught that all human beings are equal in the eyes of God and that only a person’s actions determine their honor or dishonor.
Influence and Followers
The teachings of Sant Ravidas attracted followers from all sections of society. The Maharaja and Rani of Chittor became his disciples, and the renowned saint-poet Mirabai accepted him as her spiritual teacher.
Even Sikandar Lodi is believed to have been influenced by his teachings and honored him.
Literary Contributions and Teachings
Sant Ravidas composed many devotional hymns, rich in spiritual insight and universal values. Around 41 of his hymns are included in the Guru Granth Sahib.
His teachings emphasize:
- Repetition of God’s name
- Equality of all human beings
- Presence of God in everyone
He believed that God exists in every individual, promoting unity and harmony among all.
Legacy and Recognition
Sant Ravidas continues to inspire millions through his message of equality, devotion, and social reform.
In recognition of his contributions, the Department of Posts issued a commemorative postage stamp in his honor.
