Every individual is unique, and every child comes into the world carrying a message of hope. Recognising this spirit, India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp to mark the International Conference on Autism hosted by Tamana Association, celebrating what may be called “Our World of Special Children.”
Tamana Association
The conference was hosted by Tamana Association, an organisation that has been working since 1984 to educate and train children with autism as well as those with mental and multiple disabilities. Through its dedicated programmes, Tamana has played a significant role in creating awareness and providing specialised support for children with developmental challenges.
Understanding Autism
Autism is a lifelong developmental condition that affects a person’s ability to reason, communicate and interact socially. Individuals with autism may exhibit a wide range of behaviours—from repetitive body movements to difficulties in communication or, in some cases, aggressive reactions.
Early diagnosis followed by specialised educational programmes, behavioural therapies and alternative treatment approaches has been found to greatly improve the quality of life for people with autism.
Beyond Autism: A Broader Perspective on Disabilities
Disabilities are not limited to autism alone. They may include conditions ranging from mild emotional disturbances to congenital blindness, deafness, muteness, orthopaedic impairments and intellectual challenges. Despite these difficulties, many individuals with disabilities display extraordinary resilience, compassion and dedication to helping others.
Message of the Stamp
The commemorative stamp issued for this occasion is based on a painting created by special children themselves, symbolising their creativity, hope and individuality. Through this initiative, India Post extends its support and affection to the world of special children and honours organisations and individuals—such as Tamana Association—who work tirelessly with empathy and commitment for their welfare.
Conclusion
The stamp serves as a reminder that children with disabilities deserve understanding, care and opportunities to thrive. By recognising their abilities and supporting organisations that work for their empowerment, society moves closer to building a more inclusive and compassionate world.
