Introduction

Harivansh Rai Bachchan was one of the most distinguished poets of modern Hindi Literature and an important figure associated with the Nayi Kavita. His poetry reflected a blend of deep Indian cultural sensibilities and Western literary influence. Through his rich literary output, he left a lasting impact on Hindi poetry and prose.

Early Life and Education

Harivansh Rai Bachchan was born on 27 November 1907 in Allahabad (now Prayagraj). Growing up in a city where the sacred rivers Ganges and Yamuna meet, his literary sensibilities developed through a blend of Indian traditions and the study of English literature.

He pursued higher studies at the University of Allahabad, where he completed his Bachelor’s degree and began a Master’s in English Literature. However, in 1930, he left the university to participate in the Civil Disobedience Movement.

Early Literary Success

Bachchan gained instant fame with his first collection of Hindi verse, Madhushala, which he wrote during his college years. The work quickly became one of the most celebrated compositions in Hindi poetry. Its distinctive style, lyrical quality and philosophical depth have made it a timeless classic, translated into English and several other languages.

Personal Life and Inspiration

The death of his first wife Shyama deeply affected Bachchan and inspired two of his poetic works, Nisha Nimantran and Ekant Sangeet.

Later, he returned to the University of Allahabad to complete his Master’s degree and was appointed a lecturer there in 1940. In 1942, he married Teji Bachchan. The couple had two sons, including the famous Indian actor Amitabh Bachchan and Ajitabh Bachchan.

Academic and Professional Career

In 1954, Bachchan travelled to United Kingdom to pursue doctoral studies. He completed a Ph.D. with a thesis on W. B. Yeats and his interest in occultism.

After returning to India, he worked with All India Radio as a Hindi producer. Later, Jawaharlal Nehru invited him to join the Ministry of External Affairs as a Hindi language expert. He was subsequently nominated by the President of India as a member of the Rajya Sabha.

Literary Contributions and Awards

Bachchan’s literary career produced numerous poetry collections, translations, essays and autobiographical works. His collection Chausath Russi Kavitayen received the Soviet Land Nehru Award in 1966.

His anthology Do Chattane earned him the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1968. He was also honoured with the title Sahitya Vachaspati and received the Lotus Award at the Afro-Asian Writers’ Conference.

His remarkable four-volume autobiography Dashdwar Se Sopaan Tak earned him the prestigious Saraswati Samman. The Government of Uttar Pradesh also honoured him with the Yash Bharati award.

In 1976, the Government of India conferred upon him the Padma Bhushan in recognition of his immense contribution to literature.

Legacy

Between 1932 and 1995, Bachchan produced around 74 books, covering poetry, drama, essays, translations, stories and children’s literature. His simple yet profound style made his works widely accessible, and his poetry became deeply embedded in the cultural consciousness of Hindi readers.

Commemoration

To honour his immense contribution to literature and culture, India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp celebrating the life and spirit of Harivansh Rai Bachchan.
