Plan for the Planet

World Environment Day was established in 1972 by the United Nations General Assembly to encourage global awareness and action for the protection of the environment. The responsibility for coordinating its observance was entrusted to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), headquartered in Nairobi.

Celebrated every year on 5 June in more than 100 countries, World Environment Day is one of the most significant events on the global environmental calendar. The day aims to give a human dimension to environmental concerns, encourage individuals to become active participants in sustainable development, and promote partnerships that help safeguard the planet.

Urbanization and Environmental Challenges

Rapid urbanization is one of the major global challenges of the 21st century. It is estimated that most population growth in the coming decades will occur in urban areas of developing countries. This rapid growth often leads to numerous challenges, including:

  • Deteriorating basic services
  • Expansion of urban slums
  • Rising poverty levels
  • Traffic congestion
  • Increasing pollution
  • Lack of green spaces
  • Insufficient educational and health facilities

Addressing these issues requires careful planning and sustainable development strategies.

Theme for 2005: Green Cities – Plan for the Planet

The theme for World Environment Day 2005, “Green Cities: Plan for the Planet,” emphasized the importance of making cities healthier, cleaner, and more sustainable places to live. With proper planning and responsible governance, cities can become models of sustainable development, offering residents a clean and healthy environment while preserving natural resources.

International Environmental Cooperation

The United Nations Environment Programme introduced an innovative approach to environmental cooperation through the Green City Declaration. For the first time, environmental collaboration was encouraged directly among cities rather than just between national governments.

Through initiatives such as the Urban Environmental Accords, many of the world’s largest and most environmentally progressive cities committed themselves to improving urban environmental management. These accords promote cooperation between city administrations, enabling them to share knowledge, exchange technologies, and implement practical solutions to common environmental challenges.

By encouraging participation from mayors and local governments, the initiative aims to build a grassroots political movement capable of addressing environmental issues at the community level.

Environmental Initiatives in India

In India, the Ministry of Environment and Forests has implemented an ambitious programme known as the Eco-Cities Scheme. This initiative focuses on improving environmental conditions in selected heritage cities while promoting sustainable urban development.

The scheme has been implemented in several culturally significant cities including:

  • Puri
  • Vrindavan
  • Ujjain
  • Tirupati
  • Kottayam
  • Thanjavur

These projects aim to enhance environmental quality through better urban planning, improved infrastructure, and conservation efforts.

Commemorative Postage Stamp

Recognizing the importance of sustainable urban development and environmental awareness, India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp on “Green Cities” to mark World Environment Day 2005. The stamp highlights the need for responsible urban planning and collective efforts to create environmentally sustainable cities for future generations.
