100 Years of Mumbai G.P.O. and Agra H.P.O.

India Post has, over the years, featured many of its landmark postal buildings on postage stamps, reflecting the architectural grandeur and historical legacy of the Department of Posts. Continuing this tradition, India Post proudly celebrates 100 years of the Mumbai General Post Office (G.P.O.) and the Agra Head Post Office (H.P.O.), two magnificent symbols of India’s postal heritage and architectural excellence.

Mumbai General Post Office: A Century of Grandeur

Early History

The earliest records of the Bombay (now Mumbai) G.P.O. trace its location to St. George Fort near Apollo Pier. After a devastating fire destroyed the original post office, operations shifted to a new building constructed in 1869. With growing postal needs, the building soon became inadequate, prompting plans for a grand new structure near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (formerly Victoria Terminus) in 1902.

Architectural Marvel

Designed by John Begg, Consulting Architect to the Government, the new G.P.O. building was completed in March 1913, and the post office moved in the following month.

The Mumbai G.P.O. is a magnificent example of the Indo-Saracenic architectural style.
Key features include:

  • Construction using Kurla basalt, with yellow Malad stone and white Dhrangadhara stone accents
  • A skyline influenced by Islamic elements, dominated by stunning domes and minarets
  • A monumental façade stretching 522 feet
  • A central dome inspired by the Bijapur dome, measuring 65 feet in diameter and 119 feet in height

Listed as a Grade-I heritage structure under the 1995 Heritage Regulations for Greater Bombay, the building stands as a testament to the architectural brilliance of the early 20th century.

Journey into Modernity

From its colonial-era origins, the Mumbai G.P.O. has transformed into a fully computerized, modern postal centre, symbolizing the evolving face of India Post while preserving its historic charm.

Agra Head Post Office: A Landmark of Postal Heritage

Historical Background

Built in 1913, the Agra Head Post Office is situated on the picturesque Mall Road in the cantonment area of Agra. For a century, it has served as an important landmark of the city.

Architectural Characteristics

The Agra H.P.O. boasts:

  • Two elegant porches on either side
  • A prominent 45-foot-high dome at the center
  • A harmonious structural symmetry reflective of early 20th-century design

Like its Mumbai counterpart, the Agra H.P.O. is also recognized as a Postal Heritage Building, valued for both its architectural beauty and historic importance.

Modern Adaptation

Keeping pace with contemporary needs, the Agra H.P.O. today operates as a fully computerized post office, blending heritage with modern functionality.

Honouring a Century of Service

The Department of Posts proudly celebrates the 100 glorious years of the Mumbai G.P.O. and Agra H.P.O. two iconic structures that continue to serve millions while standing tall as symbols of India’s rich postal legacy. Through commemorative stamps and recognition, India Post honours the architectural beauty, historic significance, and enduring service of these remarkable buildings.
