5th Asian Games 1966 Hockey Champions

India’s triumph over Pakistan in the Asian Games at Bangkok on December 19, 1966, once again showcased our dominance in the realm of hockey—a game that demands skill, courage, stamina, artistry, and teamwork. Spectators at the hockey final were captivated by the magnificent display of stick work by the Indian team, particularly their prowess in short-passing and dribbling.
After a grueling battle lasting 70 minutes, with no results, India emerged victorious during the first half of extra time. Balbir Singh of Railways, receiving a pass from his inside right, executed a brilliant angular shot to score the winning goal. This resounding victory saw India, the Olympic Champions, reclaim the Asian hockey championship from Pakistan, who had won it in 1958 at Tokyo and again in Djakarta four years later.
India’s hockey legacy traces back to 1928 when we clinched the Olympic title in Amsterdam, defeating Holland. Our recent success is a testament to the enduring legacy of hockey legends like Dhyan Chand. It embodies the spirit of selfless teamwork, skill, courage, determination, and meticulous organization, of which our nation rightfully takes pride.
In tribute to the remarkable achievement of the Indian hockey team at the Fifth Asian Games in Bangkok, the Indian Posts and Telegraphs Department is issuing a special commemorative stamp on December 31, 1966.
