Lifeline of Communication and Essential Services
The outbreak of COVID-19, declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization in March 2020, brought unprecedented disruption to daily life and essential services. Amid nationwide lockdowns and movement restrictions, the Department of Posts, operating the world’s largest postal network, emerged as a vital lifeline for millions of citizens across India. Postal workers rose to the challenge as frontline COVID-19 Warriors, ensuring continuity of critical services during the crisis.
Ensuring Uninterrupted Essential Services
Recognizing the indispensable role of postal services, the Government of India exempted post offices from lockdown restrictions. Postal employees worked relentlessly to deliver lifesaving medicines, COVID-19 test kits, N95 masks, ventilators, and other essential medical supplies to even the remotest corners of the country. Their dedication ensured that citizens continued to receive critical support despite widespread disruptions.
Financial Inclusion During the Pandemic
During the pandemic, the Department of Posts played a crucial role in maintaining financial stability for millions. Through its extensive network of post offices, Postal Savings Bank, and India Post Payments Bank (IPPB), postal workers facilitated essential banking services such as cash deposits and withdrawals, remittances, and government benefit transfers.
As on 8 July 2020, officials of the Department of Posts facilitated:
- Over 13 crore transactions amounting to ₹2.59 lakh crore through Postal Savings Bank accounts
- 5.36 crore transactions worth more than ₹13,000 crore via India Post Payments Bank
- 1.63 crore AEPS transactions amounting to ₹3,249 crore
These services proved critical for pensioners, rural populations, migrant families, and beneficiaries of government welfare schemes.
Commitment Amidst Risk and Adversity
Postal workers continued their duties despite exposure to health risks, long working hours, and challenging conditions. From doorstep delivery in containment zones to supporting digital financial services, their efforts ensured trust, connectivity, and resilience at the grassroots level during the pandemic.
Saluting the Postal COVID-19 Warriors
The unwavering dedication of Department of Posts employees exemplifies the spirit of public service and national commitment. Their silent yet impactful contribution strengthened India’s response to the COVID-19 crisis and upheld the values of service, reliability, and inclusivity.
Department of Posts is pleased to release a set of four Commemorative Postage Stamps to pay tribute to these COVID-19 Warriors, honoring the invaluable service rendered by postal workers who stood firm in the nation’s hour of need.
