Guru Gobind Singh, despite his brief life span, holds a significant place in the history of India, not only for his military prowess but also for his contributions in social and ethical domains. He expressed a desire to unite his forces with the Rajputs and Marathas to confront the Mughals decisively. Tragically, it was at Nanded where he met his untimely demise at the age of forty-two, stabbed by a hired assassin of the Nawab of Sirhind.
Renowned historian Latif described Guru Gobind Singh as a multifaceted figure, acknowledging his role as a lawgiver, a warrior, a ruler, and a humble member of the Khalsa community. Similarly, Dr. Gokul Chand Narang noted the Guru’s impact on the psyche of the nation, stating that while he may not have physically liberated the nation from its shackles, he instilled a sense of freedom and aspiration in the hearts of his followers.
Recognizing the enduring legacy of this great son of India, the Posts and Telegraphs Department took pride in commemorating Guru Gobind Singh’s third birth centenary on January 17, 1967, by issuing a special postage stamp in his honor.
