A Designer Rooted in Tradition
Ritu Beri, one of India’s most celebrated fashion designers, has always drawn inspiration from the country’s cultural heritage. Twenty-five years ago, when she launched her brand, she made a bold yet deeply personal choice—khadi as her fabric of expression. For Ritu, khadi was more than just cloth; it was a fabric woven with history, philosophy, and the simplicity of everyday life. Having seen her forefathers and cousins wear it, khadi was a natural canvas for her creativity.
Vastra: A Tribute to Khadi
Her collection “Vastra” is both a celebration and a revival of khadi. It embodies the values espoused by Mahatma Gandhi, who regarded khadi as a symbol of India’s self-reliance and dignity. Through Vastra, Ritu Beri reimagined khadi with a modern flair, proving that this humble fabric could be both functional and fashionable while retaining its soulful charm.
Carrying Forward Gandhi’s Legacy
Ritu Beri’s association with khadi went beyond design. Recognizing her commitment, she was appointed as an advisor to the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC). In this role, she championed khadi’s importance not just as a fabric of freedom but also as an instrument of empowerment for rural artisans across India.
A Stamp of Celebration
India Post, through its Commemorative Postage Stamp series on Indian Fashion – Designers’ Creations: Series 4, honored Ritu Beri’s Vastra collection. The stamp highlights her ability to reinterpret tradition for modern audiences while preserving the cultural and historical essence of khadi.
