The Second United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) is set to convene in New Delhi from February 1st to March 25th, 1968. This conference represents a global effort towards formulating a comprehensive strategy for development and international cooperation. Approximately 1400 delegates from 132 member countries of UNCTAD will participate, alongside observers from UN specialized agencies and other UN bodies.
The conference’s agenda includes an assessment of the world economic situation and a review of progress made on the recommendations of the first conference held in 1964. Discussions will focus on achieving greater consensus on international trade policies, addressing issues such as East-West trade and trade between countries with differing economic and social systems. Additionally, the impact of regional economic groupings will be examined.
Special attention will be given to the problems facing developing countries. Developing nations have raised concerns about tariff preferences for their manufactured goods, and industrialized countries are expected to respond accordingly. The flow of international public and private capital into developing countries will also be a significant topic. Moreover, discussions will cover regional arrangements among developing countries.
Given India’s status as a developing economy, the conference holds particular importance for the country. The event will strengthen international cooperation in trade and commerce, with the hope that its outcomes will contribute to increased global prosperity, with developing countries receiving a larger share.
As the host country, India takes pride in welcoming this significant international gathering. To commemorate the inauguration of the conference, the Posts & Telegraphs Department is issuing a special postage stamp.
