India’s First Flying Ace
The First World War (1914–1918) was a defining moment in world history, reshaping nations, societies and global relations. Though still under colonial rule, India made a monumental contribution to the Allied war effort, sending nearly 1.4 million men overseas, of whom approximately 74,000 laid down their lives. Among these valiant soldiers stood a young pioneer of Indian aviation — Lieutenant Indra Lal Roy, the first Indian flying ace and a hero of the skies.
A Brave Young Aviator
Born in Calcutta (now Kolkata) in 1898, Indra Lal Roy was studying in London when the war broke out. His courage and determination led him to join the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) — later the Royal Air Force (RAF) — where he trained as a combat pilot. Displaying exceptional flying skill and daring, he was credited with shooting down eight German fighter aircraft during intense aerial battles over France.
Gallantry in the Skies
In recognition of his valour and supreme skill, Lieutenant Roy was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) — becoming the only Indian pilot to receive this decoration during the First World War. His achievements were particularly remarkable, as they came during a time when few Indians served as commissioned officers in combat roles.
Tragically, his promising life was cut short when he was killed in action on 22 July 1918, at the age of just 19, during a dogfight with German Fokker D.VII aircraft.
A Lasting Legacy
Lieutenant Indra Lal Roy’s bravery and sacrifice stand as a shining example of India’s contribution to the Great War. His name is etched among the earliest heroes who helped lay the foundations of India’s aviation and military legacy.
Commemorative Postage Stamp
To honour his memory and celebrate his extraordinary courage, the Department of Posts is proud to issue a Commemorative Postage Stamp on Lieutenant Indra Lal Roy — a fearless air warrior who soared into history as India’s first flying ace, symbolising the indomitable spirit of the nation and its sons who served with glory across the battlefields of the world.
