Dendrobium gibsonii Lindl., commonly known as Gibson’s Dendrobium, is a captivating orchid species admired for its striking flowers and sweet fragrance. Belonging to one of the most diverse genera of orchids, this species stands out for its ornamental appeal and unique flowering characteristics.
Found in select regions of India’s rich orchid habitats, Dendrobium gibsonii grows primarily as an epiphyte on trees in humid, forested areas. Its blossoms are vibrant, eye-catching, and delicately scented, making the plant highly desirable among orchid enthusiasts. The species is also known for its fluctuating flowering patterns, a trait that adds an element of surprise to its blooming cycle.
Interestingly, fruits of Dendrobium gibsonii are rarely observed in nature, highlighting the orchid’s dependence on specific pollinators and favourable environmental conditions for successful reproduction. On certain occasions, the plant produces an unusually high number of inflorescences per stem, resulting in a spectacular floral display that enhances its horticultural value.
As orchids largely inhabit fragile ecosystems, Dendrobium gibsonii also remains sensitive to environmental changes and habitat pressures. The Department of Posts has honoured this beautiful species through its special postage stamp issue on Orchids of India, drawing attention to its botanical charm and the need for conservation.
