(Equus hemionus kiang)
The Kiang, or Tibetan Wild Ass, is the largest among all African and Asiatic wild asses and is one of the most striking wildlife species of the cold desert landscapes of Ladakh. Known for its beauty, agility, and remarkable endurance, the Kiang is a symbol of the rugged wilderness of the Himalayan plateau.
Appearance and Distinctive Features
The Kiang’s physical characteristics make it stand apart from other wild asses:
- A reddish coat in summer, turning dark brown in winter
- Almost white underparts, creating a bold contrast
- Short ears, a large tail tuft, and broad hooves—giving it a horse-like appearance
- A short, upright mane and a dark dorsal stripe running from the nape to the tail
These features reflect its adaptation to the harsh, windswept terrain of high-altitude regions.
Habitat and Range
The Kiang primarily inhabits:
- Tibet
- Certain regions of China
- Eastern Ladakh
- Northern Sikkim
In India, Ladakh’s vast open plains and alpine meadows provide the perfect environment for these agile animals.
Behaviour and Adaptation
Known for its incredible speed, the Kiang can run over 50 km per hour, making it one of the swiftest animals of the Himalayan highlands. Kiangs usually live in herds and graze on sparsely growing tough grasses, expertly adapted to survive in environments with minimal vegetation.
A Treasure of Ladakh’s Wilderness
The Kiang is a vital part of the high-altitude ecosystem of Ladakh. Its presence enriches the region’s wildlife diversity and reflects the resilience and beauty of life in the Himalayan cold desert.
Commemorative Postage Stamp
To celebrate this magnificent species, the Department of Posts is pleased to release a Commemorative Postage Stamp on the Kiang, highlighting its ecological importance and the natural splendour of Ladakh.
