Historical Background

Alleppey, now known as Alappuzha, was a principal port of the erstwhile princely state of Travancore. The port was founded in 1772 by the visionary Prime Minister Raja Kesava Das during the reign of Sri Rama Rajah Bahadur. Owing to its strategic location, the port soon attracted vessels from major Indian and European ports, becoming an important centre of maritime trade.

Establishment of the Lighthouse

The proposal for constructing a modern lighthouse at Alleppey was first made in 1840. However, actual construction began only in 1860 with the appointment of Hugh Crawford as Commercial Agent to the Travancore State and Port Officer, Alleppey. The lighthouse tower was designed in the shape of a queen’s pawn in chess, symbolising the “Queen of the Arabian Sea.” The construction of the present lighthouse tower was completed in 1862, during the reign of Rama Varma Maharaja.

Early Lighting System

The original lighthouse was equipped with nine catadioptric lenses and nine coconut oil wick lamps fitted with polished reflectors. This lighting system had a visibility range of 17 nautical miles. The lighting apparatus was supplied by M/s J. Milne and Sons, Scotland, and served the port effectively for nearly a century.

Electrification and Modernisation

In 1960, the Alleppey Lighthouse was electrified using modern lighting apparatus supplied by M/s B.B.T., France. This upgrade marked a major advancement in navigational safety and ensured continued service to maritime traffic along the coast.

Legacy and Philatelic Significance

Over time, the Alleppey Lighthouse has become an enduring symbol of the city’s maritime heritage. It stands not only as a navigational aid but also as an iconic landmark closely associated with the identity of Alleppey. Recognising its historical and cultural importance, the Department of Posts has issued a Commemorative Postage Stamp depicting the Alleppey (Alappuzha) Lighthouse.
