A Legacy of Women’s Education
Foundation and Vision
Isabella Thoburn College was founded by Miss Isabella Thoburn, an American missionary, with a noble mission to serve the women of India through quality higher education rooted in strong moral and spiritual values. Her vision was far ahead of its time, aiming to empower women through education when social norms largely restricted them to domestic spaces.
Humble Beginnings
The journey began on 18th April, 1870 in Lucknow, with a small school comprising just six girls. Over time, this modest initiative grew steadily, reflecting the increasing acceptance and importance of women’s education.
Growth into a Degree College
The school evolved into an intermediate college, and in 1886, it was upgraded to a full-fledged degree college for women. Establishing a women’s degree college during an era of rigid social constraints stands as a testament to the vision, courage and dedication of Miss Isabella Thoburn.
Guiding Philosophy and Core Values
The guiding philosophy of Isabella Thoburn College emphasizes that education is more than merely passing examinations. The college strives to inculcate the ten cardinal personality traits of its founder, first identified by Miss Ava Hunt during the original College Initiation (later known as the Portal Service). These values are:
- Health
- Honesty
- Dependability
- Scholarliness
- Broadmindedness
- Courtesy
- Poise
- Loyalty
- Spirituality
- Service
These principles continue to shape the character and outlook of students.
Academic Mission and Objectives
Isabella Thoburn College is committed to functioning as a comprehensive institution, with balanced emphasis on undergraduate, postgraduate and professional education. The central objective is to foster an environment that nurtures:
- Excellence in learning and teaching
- Creativity and intellectual growth
- Empowerment of women for meaningful roles in society
Students are encouraged not only to achieve academic distinction but also to recognize their abilities and prepare themselves for service-oriented leadership in the future.
Campus Life and Student Strength
Today, the college has a vibrant student population of approximately 3000 students. The campus, along with its ethos and culture, has borne witness to the evolution of the modern Indian woman, reflecting social transformation over more than a century.
