Poet, Patriot and Pioneer of Urdu Journalism
Hasrat Mohani, born Syed Fazl-ul-Hasan, was a celebrated Urdu poet, freedom fighter and one of the earliest champions of journalism in Urdu. His pen name Hasrat reflected his poetic identity, while Mohani denoted his birthplace Mohan in the Unnao district of the erstwhile United Province (now Uttar Pradesh). A brilliant and dedicated student, he completed his B.A. from the renowned Mohammedan Anglo Oriental College (MAO), Aligarh, today known as Aligarh Muslim University.
Beginning of a Literary and Journalistic Journey
Hasrat Mohani’s deep interest in Urdu literature and journalism led him to launch the influential magazine “Urdu-e-Mualla” in 1903 after settling in Aligarh. Through this publication, he brought to light rare literary works and enriched the Urdu literary world. His writings on literature, politics and social issues established him as a pioneer in Urdu journalism.
For Hasrat Mohani, journalism was not merely a profession—it was a mission dedicated to social justice, aimed at giving a voice to the marginalized and oppressed sections of society.
Role in the Freedom Movement
His political involvement began early. He attended the Indian National Congress session in Bombay in 1904 as a delegate. During this period, the Swadeshi Movement gained momentum, and Hasrat Mohani emerged as one of its spirited supporters.
In 1905, he actively participated in the All India Industrial Conference, campaigning for the adoption of indigenous goods and national self-reliance. To further this cause, he and his wife opened a Swadeshi store, which soon became a successful effort promoting indigenous products.
His unwavering commitment to India’s freedom struggle often brought him into conflict with the British authorities, resulting in several prison terms. Despite hardships, he remained steadfast in his principles and continued his work for national liberation.
Legacy and Passing
Hasrat Mohani passed away on 13 May 1951 in Lucknow, leaving behind a rich legacy as a poet, patriot and social reformer. His fearless journalism, poetic brilliance and dedication to national causes continue to inspire generations.
Commemorative Postage Stamp
In honour of his remarkable contributions to literature, journalism and India’s freedom movement, a commemorative postage stamp on Hasrat Mohani was issued by India Post, celebrating his enduring legacy.
