Each year, the Department of Posts issues a special postage stamp on Children’s Day, observed on 14 November, to commemorate the birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister and a great advocate of children’s welfare.

As part of its efforts to promote environmental awareness among young minds, India Post organized a ‘Design a Stamp’ contest with the theme “Save the Tiger” on 12 December 2010, as one of the special events of INDIPEX 2011. The contest sought to draw attention to the alarming decline in the population of tigers, one of the world’s most endangered species and a vital indicator of ecological health.

Through their imaginative and thought-provoking paintings, children from across the country highlighted the critical factors responsible for the dwindling tiger population, including habitat destruction, poaching and environmental degradation. These artworks reflected not only creativity but also a deep concern for nature and wildlife conservation.

To honour these young artists and amplify their message, the prize-winning entries at the national level have been presented on a set of two commemorative postage stamps, along with a Miniature Sheet and First Day Cover.

The paintings featured, ad seriatim, are by:

  • Shreekarsha V, Class V, Karnataka
  • A. Priya Dharshini, Class V, Tamil Nadu
  • Riya Dutta, Class IV, Himachal Pradesh
  • Ashik Purusothaman, Class VIII, Kerala
  • Jayshree Sahu, Class VIII, Odisha
  • Ragini Pandey, Class VII, Uttar Pradesh
  • Shubham Sahu, Class X, Chhattisgarh
  • Nishi Boradia, Class IX, Madhya Pradesh
  • Jai Surya P, Class IX, Kerala

Each painting carries a powerful message, reminding us that saving the tiger is essential for preserving the ecological balance and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.

To mark the occasion, the Department of Posts commemorates National Children’s Day 2011 with the issue two commemorative postage stamps themed “The Tiger”, celebrating both children’s creativity and the urgent need for wildlife conservation.
