Symbol of Authority and Spiritual Harmony
The Central Dome of Rashtrapati Bhavan is its most commanding architectural feature, rising majestically above the building and crowned by the National Tricolour. Conceived by Sir Edwin Landseer Lutyens, the dome stands as a powerful visual and symbolic focal point of the former Viceroy’s House, now the official residence of the President of India.
Architectural Inspiration
The dome is designed in a Neo-Buddhist style, paying homage to the ancient Stupa of Sanchi, one of India’s most revered architectural forms. This conscious reference to India’s classical heritage reflects Lutyens’ effort to blend Western architectural principles with indigenous traditions, giving the structure a distinctly Indian identity.
Design and Structure
Measuring 22.8 metres in diameter, the Central Dome is clad with copper sheets which, over time, have acquired a rich dark patina, enhancing its grandeur and dignity. The dome rises from a square base and is encircled by a Buddhist railing inspired by Sanchi, further reinforcing its spiritual symbolism.
At each corner of the square base are four octagonal kiosks, whose vertical lines break the continuous curve of the dome and add rhythmic balance to the overall composition. This interplay of geometric forms exemplifies Lutyens’ mastery of proportion and scale.
Symbolism and National Significance
Originally conceived as an emblem of imperial authority, the Central Dome has undergone a profound transformation in meaning. Today, with the Indian National Flag flying atop it, the dome symbolizes sovereignty, unity and democratic governance, marking Rashtrapati Bhavan as the heart of the world’s largest democracy.
Commemorative Stamp
Recognizing the architectural magnificence and historical importance of Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Department of Posts issued a set of commemorative postage stamps celebrating its eighty years of existence. The Central Dome, as the most iconic feature of the structure, forms a prominent subject in philatelic representations, highlighting India’s architectural heritage and national pride.
