‘Mahanati’ of Telugu and Tamil Cinema
Birth and Early Life
Savithri was born on 4 January 1936 at Chirravuru, in Guntur district, Madras Presidency, British India (now in Andhra Pradesh). Born into a wealthy family, she displayed exceptional artistic talent from an early age. She received formal training in music and dance under Sista Purnayya Sastry and gave several public performances as a child in Vijayawada, earning early recognition for her expressive abilities.
Entry into Theatre
She began her artistic career in theatre, working with a dramatic company run by eminent figures such as N. T. Rama Rao (NTR) and K. Jaggaiah. Demonstrating initiative and leadership, she later founded her own theatre group, the Navabharata Natya Mandali. One of her notable stage performances was in the play ‘Atma Vanchana’ by Buchi Babu, which highlighted her dramatic depth.
Film Debut and Rise to Stardom
Savithri made her film debut in L. V. Prasad’s ‘Samsaram’. This was followed by her role in K. V. Reddy’s ‘Patala Bhairavi’, a landmark film in Telugu cinema. Though she initially played several minor roles, her breakthrough came with ‘Pelli Chesi Choodu’, which made her a star. Films such as ‘Ardhangi’ and ‘Missamma’ firmly established her as an actress of extraordinary talent and versatility.
Notable Film Career
Savithri acted in numerous films directed by the renowned choreographer-director Raghavaiah and became particularly famous for her powerful portrayals in mythological, social, and family dramas. Her expressive face, emotional depth and natural dialogue delivery earned her the affectionate title ‘Mahanati’ (The Great Actress).
She frequently starred opposite Gemini Ganesan, with whom she shared a popular on-screen pairing, and later married him.
Work as Director and Producer
Between 1968 and 1971, Savithri ventured into film direction and production. Although these efforts did not achieve major commercial success, they reflected her creative ambition and commitment to cinema beyond acting.
Death and Legacy
Savithri passed away on 26 December 1981 at Madras (now Chennai), Tamil Nadu, India. Despite her relatively short life, her contribution to Indian cinema remains monumental. She is remembered as one of the finest actresses in Indian film history, whose performances continue to inspire generations.
