The 2010 Commonwealth Games were held in New Delhi from 3rd October to 14th October 2010. It was the largest multi-sport event hosted in Delhi since the Asian Games of 1951 and 1982, and marked the first time that the Commonwealth Games were conducted in India.
A total of 85 Commonwealth nations and territories participated in 260 events across 17 sporting disciplines. The competitions were conducted in upgraded existing stadiums as well as newly constructed venues specially developed for the Games.
Ceremonies and Identity
The opening and closing ceremonies were held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. These grand ceremonies highlighted the spirit, talent, and rich cultural heritage of India, blending tradition with modernity.
The official mascot, Shera, symbolized contemporary and traditional India. Representing the tiger, Shera embodied values such as majesty, strength, charisma, intelligence, grace, and elegance.
The official slogan of the Games was “Come out and Play.” The tagline served as an open invitation to people across India and the Commonwealth to participate wholeheartedly and uphold the true sporting spirit.
Philatelic Commemoration
To celebrate this landmark sporting event, India Post issued special commemorative postage stamps. Earlier, two sets had been released — one on the Queen’s Baton Relay and another featuring the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and Talkatora Stadium.
On the inaugural day of the Games, India Post further commemorated the occasion by issuing a set of four stamps depicting Badminton, archery, hockey, and athletics. These stamps captured the excitement and dynamism of the XIX Commonwealth Games, Delhi 2010, and stand as lasting reminders of India’s proud moment on the global sporting stage.
