Permanent Pictorial cancellation of Gifu-Nagara post office, Japan

〒 502-0835 1-12
Oda-cho, Gifu City
JAPAN

This postmark depicts the famous and ancient method of fishing at Nagwara river. This permanent pictorial cancellation was released on May 11, 1990.

Cormorant fishing in Japa called ukai in Japanese. Originally, it was done as one of the main fishing methods for ayu (sweetfish) fishing. However, since it is “unique” (as it uses birds and skilful techniques), viewing cormorant fishing, since the Heian period, has been used as amusement for aristocratic classes and warlords in Japan.

Cormorant fishing currently takes place in 13 cities in Japan. The most famous location is Gifu, home to cormorant fishing on the Nagara River, which has continued uninterrupted for the past 1,300 years.

Ukai is performed every night from May 11th to October 15th, except on days of high water and on the night of the Harvest Moon in autumn.

It is very nice to know about the PPC of a Gifu Nagara post office. I was watching this video of the old fishing method in Japan. Now as a Philatelist I am happy to see the PPC on the same.
