Commemorative Stamp: Golden Jubilee of the Eleventh Gorkha Rifles

Historical Significance:

  • The Eleventh Gorkha Rifles holds a distinguished place in the annals of military history, particularly within the Indian Army. Renowned for their valor, the Kirantis, or Gorkhas, are celebrated for their martial prowess, with a tradition of soldiering that comes naturally to these khukri-wielding hill men. The Eleventh Gorkha Rifles is the first infantry and the only Gorkha Regiment to have been raised post-independence, on 1st January 1948.

Formation and Growth:

  • Initially raised with two battalions, the regiment has grown into a formidable force, now comprising six battalions and one Territorial Army Battalion. Over the past 50 years, the regiment has consistently demonstrated exceptional courage and commitment in various operations undertaken by India.

Operational Excellence:

  • The Eleventh Gorkha Rifles played a prominent role in the 1948 operations, showcasing their bravery at the forefront. They also made significant contributions during the swift police action in Hyderabad. In the 1965 Indo-Pak operations, the regiment’s battalions distinguished themselves with acts of valor.
  • During the 1971 Indo-Pak War, all battalions of the regiment participated in some of the major and decisive battles. The Second and Fifth Battalions were awarded Battle Honours for their extraordinary achievements in the Shingo River Valley and Bogra, respectively.

Counter-Insurgency and Peacekeeping:

  • Beyond conventional warfare, the regiment has excelled in counter-insurgency operations. The First and Second Battalions were awarded the Unit Citation by the Chief of the Army Staff in recognition of their exceptional service in these operations. Additionally, the regiment has served as part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force in Sri Lanka, further cementing its reputation.

Adventure and Spirit:

  • The regiment has also made a name for itself in adventure sports, with its members scaling some of the world’s most challenging peaks, including Everest, Kamet, Noukun, and Devban.

Recruitment and Battle Cry:

  • The Eleventh Gorkha Rifles primarily recruits from the Rais and Limbus communities, with Tarnangs, Pradhans, Sunwars, Bhutias, Sherpas, and other Gorkha tribes making up the balance. Their battle cry strikes fear into the hearts of their enemies, embodying their unwavering motto, “Nisswarth Kartavya” or “Selfless Service.”

Commemorative Stamp:

  • The Department of Posts is honored to issue a special commemorative stamp to mark the Golden Jubilee of the Eleventh Gorkha Rifles, celebrating 50 years of their extraordinary contributions to the nation’s defense and their continued legacy of valor, selflessness, and service.
