Introduction

The soldiers of the Indian Army are renowned for their gallantry, tactical brilliance and unwavering commitment to the defence of the nation. Discipline, tradition and ceremonial excellence are also integral aspects of the Army’s ethos. These values were exemplified by the distinguished battalion 2nd Guards (1 Grenadiers), whose history reflects courage, dedication and outstanding military service.

Formation and Early History

The origins of the battalion can be traced back to the Adhoc Grenadier Battalion, which was formed by combining six Grenadier companies of the Army. The battalion was officially raised on 22 November 1778 during the colonial period. Its first military operation involved an advance from Mumbai to Pune under the command of Captain James Stewart.

Over time, the battalion built a reputation for bravery and effectiveness in several important campaigns of the pre-independence era.

Distinguished Service in Pre-Independence Campaigns

The soldiers of the battalion displayed remarkable courage in several historic campaigns. These included the Siege of Mangalore, the Battle of Maiwand, and operations in Somaliland between 1901 and 1903.

During the First World War, the battalion served in several theatres including Egypt, East Africa, and Palestine.

The Somaliland campaign was particularly notable, as three soldiers of the unit who later received the prestigious Victoria Cross served together in the battalion—an exceptional distinction.

During the Second World War, the battalion continued its record of distinguished service, fighting with determination in the Middle East.

Transition After Independence

After India gained independence, the battalion entered a new phase of service. In 1952, K. M. Cariappa, who later became Field Marshal, selected 1 Grenadiers to become part of the elite Brigade of the Guards, redesignating it as the 2nd Battalion of the Guards (2 Guards).

Role During Partition and Early Operations

During the partition of India in 1947, troops of the battalion helped evacuate thousands of refugees to safety as part of the Punjab Boundary Force.

In 1948, the battalion achieved a significant victory by capturing the Gurais Valley from Pakistani raiders during operations in Jammu and Kashmir. This achievement earned the prestigious Battle Honour “GURAIS” along with numerous gallantry awards including seven Vir Chakras and nine Mentions-in-Despatches.

International and Later Operations

The battalion also served in an international capacity as part of the United Nations International Supervisory Mission in Indo-China from 1954 to 1957, contributing to peacekeeping efforts.

It again distinguished itself during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, demonstrating exceptional courage and operational capability.

Counter-Insurgency Operations

In later years, the battalion played a significant role in counter-insurgency operations. It served in Nagaland between 1958–1961 and 1983–1986, and later in Jammu and Kashmir during 1993–1994 and again in 2001.

For its distinguished service in these challenging operations, the battalion received several honours including two Sena Medals, six Chief of Army Staff Commendation Cards, and five Army Commander’s Commendation Cards.

Commemoration

The year 2003 marked 225 years since the raising of the battalion. To honour this remarkable milestone and the long tradition of bravery and service, India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp celebrating the legacy of the 2nd Guards (1 Grenadiers).

Conclusion

With a history spanning more than two centuries, the 2nd Guards (1 Grenadiers) stands as a shining example of courage, discipline and dedication in the Indian Army. Its distinguished record in wars, peacekeeping missions and counter-insurgency operations reflects the enduring spirit of the soldiers who have served in its ranks. 🇮🇳
