The 2 Guards Batallion
1 Grenadiers: A Legacy of Gallantry and Tradition
The Indian Army is founded on unwavering principles of gallantry, tactical brilliance, and complete commitment to the nation’s defense. These qualities have won the Army countless laurels, ensuring its enduring service and dedication. Alongside martial prowess, the Army places great emphasis on ceremony and tradition, which instill a sense of discipline and order among soldiers. This blending of valor and tradition was symbolized in 1952 when 1 Grenadiers became part of the elite Brigade of The Guards, under the leadership of Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa. The Battalion took on the role of the 2 Guards, carrying forward a legacy that dates back to 22 November 1778.
Historical Campaigns and Pre-Independence Legacy
The 1 Grenadiers Battalion was originally formed from six Grenadier Companies and embarked on its first military operation, advancing from Mumbai to Pune under the command of Captain James Stewart. Over the centuries, the Battalion distinguished itself in numerous significant campaigns, including:
- Mangalore (1783-84): Showcasing the Battalion’s fighting spirit in a challenging conflict.
- Maiwand (1880): A major battle during the Second Anglo-Afghan War.
- Somaliland (1901-03): A particularly remarkable campaign, where three Victoria Cross winners served in the unit simultaneously.
- World War I: The Battalion played a key role in Egypt, East Africa, and Palestine.
In the Second World War, the Battalion continued to demonstrate exemplary valor and resilience, particularly in the Middle East.
Post-Independence Contributions
Following India’s independence, the Battalion played a crucial role in several operations:
- During Partition, the unit helped evacuate thousands of refugees to safety as part of the Punjab Boundary Force.
- In 1948, the Battalion captured the Gurais Valley in Kashmir from Pakistani raiders, earning the Battle Honour “GURAIS”. For their unmatched bravery, the Battalion was awarded seven Vir Chakras and nine Mention-in-Despatches.
- Between 1954 and 1957, the Battalion served with the International Supervisory Mission, a United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Indo-China.
In the 1971 Indo-Pak War, the Battalion again demonstrated its skill and bravery, playing a critical role in Jammu and Kashmir.
Counter-Insurgency Operations
The Battalion has also been at the forefront of counter-insurgency operations, serving in:
- Nagaland from 1958-61 and again from 1983-86.
- Jammu and Kashmir from 1993-94 and 2001.
For their exemplary service, the Battalion earned two Sena Medals, six Chief of Army Commendation Cards, and five Army Commanders Commendation Cards.
Commemorative Postage Stamp: 225 Years of Service
In 2003, the Battalion marked its 225th anniversary, an extraordinary milestone for one of the oldest and most decorated units in the Indian Army. To commemorate this occasion, the Department of Posts issued a special postage stamp, celebrating the Battalion’s rich history of service, valor, and dedication to the nation. This stamp serves as a tribute to the unflinching courage, tactical expertise, and deep-rooted traditions of the 1 Grenadiers, which continue to inspire future generations of soldiers.
