The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was established on July 29, 1957, with its headquarters situated in Vienna, Austria. Since its inception, the agency’s membership has expanded from 57 Member-States to a current total of 110, with 79 of them being developing countries. While autonomous, the IAEA operates within the United Nations System and submits reports of its activities to the General Assembly and other UN bodies.
The Secretariat of the IAEA, led by a Director General, comprises approximately 1,500 international civil servants recruited from over 60 Member-States. The primary objective of the IAEA, as outlined in its Statute, is to promote the use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes such as enhancing peace, health, and prosperity worldwide, ensuring that its assistance is not utilized for military purposes.
The executive body of the agency is the Board of Governors, which consists of representatives from 34 Member-States, with 12 appointed by the Board and 22 elected by the General Conference. Since its inception, India has been a member of the Board of Governors, representing one of the nine countries most advanced in atomic energy technology. India’s active involvement in the agency’s endeavors underscores its significant role in advancing the peaceful utilization of atomic energy.
The IAEA’s General Conference, attended by all 110 Member-States, convenes annually for a comprehensive discussion on its policies and programs. During these sessions, the General Conference reviews the agency’s budget and annual report, approves membership applications, and elects new members to the Board of Governors. While typically held at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna, the General Conference occasionally takes place outside Vienna, with India hosting the event for the fourth time.
In recognition of the 23rd General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency being held in New Delhi, the Indian Posts and Telegraphs Department is proud to issue a special stamp to commemorate this significant occasion.
