Twenty-five years ago, on January 26, 1950, the Constitution established India as a ‘Sovereign Democratic Republic’. It aimed to secure justice-social, economic, and political-liberty, and equality of status and opportunity for all citizens. The Indian Constitution introduced a parliamentary government, adult franchise, democratic freedoms, and an independent judiciary. The first 25 years of our Republic faced numerous trials, including foreign aggression, natural disasters, and the challenges of transforming an underdeveloped, diverse society into a viable, strong, modern state. Despite significant obstacles, the enduring function of democratic institutions in India demonstrates the resilience and intrinsic soundness of our new polity.
Parliament, as the highest deliberative body and the nation’s grand inquest, holds a central role in the country’s constitutional framework and political life. Over the years, it has earned a unique place in the people’s esteem as the forum for expressing and realizing their aspirations, as well as addressing their grievances and difficulties. The peaceful conduct and high voter turnout in elections reflect the people’s faith in Parliament and its institutions. The Posts and Telegraphs Department proudly commemorates the successful completion of the Republic’s first 25 years and the functioning of our Constitution and Parliament by issuing a commemorative stamp for the Silver Jubilee celebrations.
