A Global Celebration of Military Sports
India was privileged to host the 4th CISM Military World Games from 14 to 21 October 2007 at Hyderabad and Mumbai. The Games were conducted under the aegis of the Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM), also known as the International Military Sports Council, headquartered in Brussels.
About CISM and the Military World Games
Founded in 1948, CISM uses sports as a powerful medium to unite the armed forces of nations across the world. Guided by its motto “Friendship Through Sports”, CISM today comprises 127 member countries. The organisation conducts more than 20 World Championships annually, in addition to the Military World Games, which are held once every four years.
The first Military World Games were held in Rome in 1995, followed by Zagreb, Croatia in 1999, and Catania, Italy in 2003.
India’s Selection as Host Nation
During the Afro-Asian Games held at Hyderabad in 2003, visiting CISM officials proposed that India host the 4th Military World Games in 2007. The proposal culminated in the formal signing of the invitation for participating countries between CISM and the Indian Armed Forces on 26 September 2006 at Hyderabad.
Logo and Mascot of MWG 2007
The Logo and Mascot of the 4th CISM Military World Games were officially launched on 27 December 2006. As an international sporting event, the logo drew inspiration from the five Olympic rings, symbolising the five inhabited continents—Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia, and the combined Americas. The five petals of the logo were artistically represented by the Lotus, India’s national flower.
The Indian Bison was chosen as the mascot of the Games. The Bison is the formation symbol of the Hyderabad-based Infantry Division of the Indian Army, making it an apt representation for a Games hosted in Hyderabad. Majestic and powerful, the Bison symbolises strength, resilience, courage, and determination—qualities closely associated with the Indian Armed Forces.
