The 4th World Book Fair, organized in New Delhi by the National Book Trust, India, in collaboration with the Indian Book Trade, stands as a pivotal event not only in India but also across Asia. Since its establishment in 1957, the National Book Trust, India, has been dedicated to fostering a culture of reading and supporting the growth of the publishing industry in the country. To achieve these objectives, the Trust publishes engaging titles in English and various Indian languages on diverse subjects, while also organizing national and international book fairs in key centers across India.
The Trust has successfully hosted three previous World Book Fairs, in 1972, 1976, and 1978, as well as several National Book Fairs. These events not only celebrate books from around the world but also showcase the advancements made by the Indian publishing industry in recent years. The 4th World Book Fair particularly highlights children’s books, Indian paperbacks, and literature for new readers. Moreover, it serves as a platform for cultural exchange among participating countries.
The Indian section of the fair boasts over 400 participants, including commercial publishers, government publishing agencies, and the University Grants Commission. The Bharatiya Bhashaon Ka Mandap, featuring books published in Indian languages, is expected to be a major attraction for visitors seeking literature in regional tongues. Additionally, Book Bazaars during the fair will offer discounted books, further promoting access to reading material.
India’s publishing industry has witnessed rapid growth, driven by increased literacy rates and demand for quality reading material. The improvement in editorial standards and book quality is evident, reflected in the significant increase in Indian book exports from Rs. 1.52 crores in 1972-73 to over Rs. 5.00 crores in 1977-78. The printing capacity has also expanded, with Indian presses adopting the latest technologies to ensure high-quality printing.
The World Book Fair provides a platform for Indian and international publishers to expand book trade and exchange insights on various aspects of book production and promotion. Alongside the fair, seminars, symposia, and workshops will be held, including discussions on publishing for rural areas in developing countries, with UNESCO’s assistance.
The Indian Posts & Telegraphs Department is honored to commemorate the 4th World Book Fair by issuing a special postage stamp, recognizing the significance of this event in promoting reading culture and celebrating the achievements of the publishing industry.
