India’s National Academy of Letters
Sahitya Akademi is the premier institution in India dedicated to the promotion of literature, literary dialogue, and publication. It is the only organization in the country that actively promotes literary activities in twenty-four languages, including English, thereby strengthening cultural and linguistic harmony across the nation.
Establishment and Objectives
The Sahitya Akademi was established in 1954 by the Government of India as an autonomous organization, fully funded by the government. Since its inception, the Akademi has worked tirelessly to:
- Encourage good reading habits
- Promote quality literature
- Foster dialogue among different linguistic communities
- Contribute to the emotional and cultural integration of India
It organizes a variety of literary events such as seminars, lectures, symposia, discussions, poetry readings, and performances, bringing together writers, scholars, and readers from across the country.
Organizational Structure
The policies and programmes of the Akademi are guided by two main bodies:
- General Council
- Executive Board
These bodies consist of distinguished writers, scholars, and academicians. The institution also has advisory boards for each recognized language, ensuring balanced representation.
The Akademi is headed by an elected President, who chairs its councils and committees, while the Secretary serves as the chief executive officer. The governing and advisory bodies are reconstituted every five years, ensuring democratic and decentralized functioning.

Publications and Literary Contributions
Over more than five decades of dynamic activity, Sahitya Akademi has published over 4,300 books in 22 Indian languages, making a significant contribution to India’s literary landscape.
The Akademi also publishes several important journals:
- Indian Literature (bi-monthly journal in English)
- Samkaleen Bharatiya Sahitya (bi-monthly journal in Hindi)
- Samskrta Pratibha (half-yearly journal in Sanskrit)
These publications feature translated literary works, essays, poetry, and criticism from various Indian languages.
Additionally, Sahitya Akademi runs special projects aimed at promoting:
- Tribal and oral literature
- Translation of literary works between languages
Awards and Honours
The highest honour conferred by Sahitya Akademi is the Fellowship of the Sahitya Akademi, which is awarded to the “Immortals of Literature.” This distinction is limited to 21 Fellows at any given time, and so far 66 eminent writers have received this honour.
The Akademi also presents several prestigious awards:
- Sahitya Akademi Awards for outstanding creative and critical writing in each recognized language
- Translation Prizes for exceptional translated works
Since its establishment, the Akademi has awarded:
- Over 850 awards for original literary works
- More than 302 Translation Prizes since 1989
In 1996, the Akademi introduced the Bhasha Samman, which honours scholars and writers for their contribution to unrecognized languages as well as Classical and Medieval literature. So far, 35 writers and scholars have received this distinction.

Sahitya Akademi organizes more than 200 literary programmes every year, providing a platform for writers from different linguistic backgrounds to exchange ideas and experiences.

Through the Archives of Indian Literature Project, the Akademi collects and preserves valuable materials related to writers, including:
- Manuscripts
- Photographs
- Audio and video recordings
- Documentary films
So far, films on more than 50 prominent writers have been produced.
Legacy and Contribution
Since post-independence India, Sahitya Akademi has served as a meeting ground for writers, translators, and scholars from diverse languages, regions, and ideological backgrounds. It has played a crucial role in building bridges between communities and cultures, strengthening the literary fabric of the nation.
