62 Cavalry holds a unique place in the history of the Indian Army. It has the dual distinction of being the first Armoured Regiment raised in independent India and also the first regiment raised on tanks. The regiment was formally raised after the issuing of orders on 1 July 1956, and it was declared fit for war on 31 March 1957.
Role in the 1965 Indo-Pak War
During the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, the regiment displayed exceptional bravery and battlefield skill. It played a pivotal role in the capture of Phillora in present-day Punjab.
In the fierce Battle of Pagowal, the regiment’s aging M4 Sherman tanks faced the advanced M48 Patton tanks of Pakistan. Despite the technological disadvantage, the regiment fought courageously and destroyed six Patton tanks and one M24 Chaffee, forcing the enemy armour to withdraw and securing the objective.
Contribution in the 1971 War
In the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, 62 Cavalry was the first regiment formed as an independent combat group of the Indian Army. It was tasked with launching a bold offensive deep into enemy territory. However, the planned operation was called off due to the ceasefire only a few hours before its commencement. During the preparations, the regiment had already moved more than 500 kilometres on tracks, demonstrating its operational readiness.
Presentation of the Guidon
On 31 March 1981, during the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the regiment, the Guidon (a prestigious military honour) was presented by Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, the then President of India.
Later Deployments
The regiment has also served the nation during several important military operations, including:
- Operation Trident
- Operation Vijay
- Operation Parakram
Regimental Badge and Motto
The badge of 62 Cavalry is rich in symbolism:
- A five-pointed star represents the five basic elements of creation.
- The outer Chakra symbolizes Sudarshan Chakra of Krishna, and also the twelve-petalled lotus of Shiva.
- The inner Chakra represents the blessings of Guru Gobind Singh in battle.
- The mace head at the centre symbolizes Yama (Kaal), the destroyer of enemies.
The regiment’s motto is “Dhairya avm Shaurya”, meaning “Fortitude and Valour.” It reflects the belief that a soldier, having surrendered to the will of God, must fight bravely and courageously.
Commemoration
To honour the glorious legacy and Golden Jubilee of the regiment, the India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp celebrating the achievements and service of 62 Cavalry to the nation.
