Influential Politician, Writer and Journalist
Murasoli Maran was a prominent Indian politician, journalist, writer and film personality who played a key role in both Tamil Nadu politics and national policymaking. A leading figure of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), he rose from humble beginnings to become one of the party’s most influential leaders and a respected voice in Indian Parliament.
Early Life and Education
Murasoli Maran was born on 17 August 1934 in Thirukkuvalai, located in Thanjavur District, in the state of Tamil Nadu. His parents were Shunmugasundram and Shunmuga Sundari.
He pursued his postgraduate studies at Pachaiyappa’s College in Chennai. From a young age, he showed strong interest in literature, journalism and politics.
Contributions to Literature and Journalism
Murasoli Maran was an accomplished Tamil writer and intellectual. He authored several books on politics and social issues. His notable works include:
- Manila Suyatchi (1974), an influential research study on Centre–State relations in India
- Dravida Iyakka Varalaru (1991), a research work on the history of the Dravidian movement
Maran also played a significant role in journalism. He was a founder member of the Madras Press Club and served as its President in 1978.
He launched and published several Tamil weeklies, including:
- Kungumam
- Mutharam
- Vannathirai
He also published an English daily newspaper titled Rising Sun.
During the anti-Hindi agitations of 1965, Maran was arrested for his writings. Later, during the The Emergency in India, he was detained for a year under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA).
Contributions to Cinema
Murasoli Maran was also deeply involved in the Tamil film industry. He demonstrated his creativity as a screenwriter, director and producer.

His film Kula Deivam received the President’s Certificate of Merit as the Best Regional Feature Film in 1956. Another film, Annayin Aanai, also won the President’s Certificate of Merit as the Second Best Regional Feature Film.
His film Engal Thangam was honoured with the Tamil Nadu Government Award as the second best film of the year.
For his contributions to screenplay and dialogue writing, the Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka Manram conferred on him the title Kalaimamani in 1975.
Parliamentary and Political Career
Murasoli Maran had a long and distinguished political career spanning 36 years. He served as a Member of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha continuously from 1967.
During his parliamentary career, he served on several important committees, including:
- Committee on Subordinate Legislation
- Committee on Public Undertakings
- Committee on Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes
- Committee on Public Accounts
- Committee on Home Affairs
He also represented India at the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in London in 1989.
Role as Union Minister
Murasoli Maran served as a Union Cabinet Minister under several Prime Ministers, including:
- V. P. Singh
- H. D. Deve Gowda
- I. K. Gujral
- Atal Bihari Vajpayee
As Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, he earned a reputation for his administrative ability and negotiation skills. He represented India as the chief negotiator at major meetings of the World Trade Organization, including the Seattle and Doha Ministerial Conferences.
At the Doha negotiations, Maran strongly defended the interests of developing countries, successfully ensuring that their concerns were considered in the final agreements. He also secured additional time for developing nations to comply with WTO rules related to patents and foreign investment.
Development Initiatives
Maran played an important role in promoting industrial and technological development. His contributions included:
- Establishment of the Chennai Trade Centre
- Promotion of the TIDEL Park, a major hub for information technology
- Initiating plans for a Special Economic Zone at Nanguneri
Legacy
Known for his affable nature and intellectual sharpness, Murasoli Maran built friendships across political parties and earned widespread respect in New Delhi and throughout the country. He also led parliamentary delegations to countries such as United Kingdom, Germany, and Ireland.
Murasoli Maran passed away on 23 November 2003 at the age of 69, while serving as a Union Minister.
