A Pioneer in Medical Education in Eastern India
Patna Medical College is one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions for training physicians and surgeons in eastern India. Established in 1925, it has played a vital role in shaping modern medical education and healthcare in the region.
Early History and Foundation
The origins of Patna Medical College trace back to the ‘Patna School of Medicine’, founded on June 23, 1874. It aimed to train junior surgeons from Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh, and nearby regions.
Later in August 1874, it was renamed the Temple School of Medicine, after Richard Temple, the then Lt. Governor of Bengal. The institution benefited not only from government support but also from contributions by philanthropists and social reformers, making it an early example of public-private cooperation in education.
Establishment as a Medical College
With growing health challenges such as malaria, typhoid, cholera, and high maternal mortality rates, there was a pressing need for advanced medical training.
As a result, the institution was upgraded, and the medical college was officially inaugurated on July 25, 1925, by Henry Wheeler. It began with just 30 students and H. R. Dutton as its first Principal.
