Honoring a Legacy of Valor and Sacrifice
The Indian Army traces its origins to the armies of the East India Company, later evolving into the British Indian Army. A defining moment came on 15 January 1949, when General K.M. Cariappa took charge as the first Commander-in-Chief of Independent India, succeeding General Sir Francis Roy Bucher, the last British Commander-in-Chief. This historic day marked the true transfer of command from the British to Independent India.
Since then, Army Day has been celebrated every year on 15 January—a tribute to the valor, courage, and sacrifice of India’s soldiers. The 75th Army Day holds special significance as the nation commemorates seven and a half decades of unwavering service and glory.
The Army Day Parade: A Symbol of Pride
Traditionally organized at Cariappa Parade Ground in Delhi under the aegis of the IHQ of Ministry of Defence (Army), the Army Day Parade 2023 was uniquely held in Bengaluru under Southern Command, reflecting the Prime Minister’s vision of connecting with people across the nation.
The parade showcases the Army’s discipline, strength, and technological capabilities. It includes an impressive display of equipment and honors meritorious soldiers through awards presented by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS).
Indian Army: A Force Beyond Boundaries
The Indian Army is renowned for its professionalism, dedication, and righteous conduct. Its indomitable spirit has been tested in multiple wars, where soldiers fought with unmatched courage. Beyond national defence, the Indian Army has also been the largest troop contributor to UN peacekeeping missions, showcasing India’s commitment to global peace.
In addition, Army personnel have brought laurels to the nation in sports, excelling in national and international competitions. This blend of strength, service, and sportsmanship makes the Army a multifaceted pillar of national pride.
On the Path to Transformation
As India moves towards becoming a self-reliant nation, the Army is embracing indigenous defence production, advanced technology, and automation to enhance its operational capabilities.
The year 2023 has been declared as “On Path to Transformation”, setting the course for the Army’s evolution into a future-ready, technology-driven, agile force. The transformation is anchored on five key domains:
- Modernisation and Technology Infusion
 - Force Restructuring and Optimisation
 - Systems, Processes and Functions
 - Jointness and Integration
 - Human Resource Management

This holistic approach ensures operational preparedness for emerging challenges across the entire spectrum of conflict.
Towards Equality and Inclusion
The Indian Army has also been a pioneer in gender equality. Women officers were first inducted in 1992, and in February 2020, they were granted Permanent Commission in “Services” and “Combat Support Arms.” This landmark step underscores the Army’s progressive vision and inclusive ethos.
A Tribute in Philately
Over the course of 75 glorious years, the Indian Army has stood as a symbol of valor, heroism, sacrifice, and fortitude. To honor this rich legacy, the Department of Posts proudly issues the 75th Year of Indian Army Day Commemorative Stamp.
This special issue not only commemorates the Army’s timeless traditions but also celebrates its journey of transformation and resilience—from its historic origins to its role as a modern, future-ready force.
Through this commemorative postage stamp, the nation salutes the Indian Army—an eternal guardian of India’s sovereignty and an iron pillar of its strength.
