Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti – The Saint of Universal Love

The Dargah Sharif of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti is celebrating its 800th Urs. Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, fondly known as Khwaja Garib Nawaz, was one of the most revered Sufi saints of India and the founder of the Chishti Order in India. After arriving from Persia in 1191 A.D., he settled in Ajmer, from where he spread the message of Sufism, rooted in compassion, humility and service to humanity.

The cornerstone of his philosophy was the timeless principle “Love to all and hate to none.” He believed that love and compassion were the true paths to attain the Divine.

Meaning and Celebration of Urs

The word “Urs” is derived from the Arabic term “Uroos”, meaning the ultimate union of the soul with God. It is believed that Khwaja Garib Nawaz spent the last six days of his life in seclusion and on the sixth day of the Islamic month of Razab, his soul left the mortal world.

The Urs is observed every year on his death anniversary and is celebrated with joy and devotion. In Sufi tradition, the death of a saint is seen not as an occasion for mourning but as a celebration of the saint’s union with the Supreme Being.

A Shrine of Harmony and Faith

The Ajmer Sharif Dargah attracts devotees from all religions, regions and socio-economic backgrounds. People visit the shrine throughout the year seeking blessings of Khwaja Garib Nawaz, who symbolized simplicity, piety and selfless service.

During the Urs, Ajmer becomes a vibrant centre of devotion with special prayers, qawwalis and continuous recitation of devotional hymns, drawing lakhs of pilgrims from across the country and abroad.

Enduring Legacy

The teachings of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti continue to inspire the democratic, secular and pluralistic ethos of India. His message of love, tolerance and human dignity remains deeply relevant in contemporary society and continues to guide generations.
