The 8th of June 1948 marked India’s entry into the realm of International Air Transport, as Air India International’s Constellation ‘Malabar Princess’ embarked on its maiden voyage from Bombay to London via Cairo and Geneva. Over the past 25 years, this period has been illustrious in the annals of Indian Air Transport, unfolding a captivating narrative of growth and expansion.

What began with an airline serving just three overseas stations has evolved into a comprehensive network, encompassing a fleet of four Boeing 747-237 Bs, four Boeing 707-437 international jets, three Boeing 707-337 Bs, and two Boeing 707-337Cs, connecting 35 cities across five continents. As Air-India’s international operations burgeoned, so did its popularity, with the iconic ‘Maharaja’ capturing the imagination of travelers worldwide.

The hallmark of Air-India’s success lies not only in its extensive network but also in the exceptional service provided by its over 10,000 dedicated personnel. The air hostesses, renowned for their looks, charm, poise, and intelligence, contribute significantly to the airline’s reputation for efficiency, safety, punctuality, and courtesy.

Moreover, Air-India’s commitment to excellence is reflected in its deployment of the best and latest aircraft available. The introduction of the majestic ‘Jumbos,’ exemplified by the Emperor Ashoka, into its fleet underscores this commitment to providing passengers with unparalleled comfort and luxury.

Recognizing the pivotal role that Air-India plays in shaping tourists’ first impressions of India, the airline has diligently endeavored to showcase the country’s rich cultural heritage during flights. This effort not only enhances India’s global image but also elevates Air-India’s prestige as the nation’s flag carrier.

To commemorate the silver jubilee of Air-India’s Overseas Operations, a multicolored stamp featuring an exhilarating night shot from the tail end of the Boeing 747 will be issued. The Postal and Telegraph Department is honored to mark this significant milestone in the history of India’s flagship airline.
