A Legend of Indian Cinema

On September 20, 2024, we mark the 100th birth anniversary of Dr. Akkineni Nageswara Rao (ANR), one of the greatest icons of Indian cinema. Born in Venkataraghava Puram Village, Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh, ANR’s journey from a young stage actor to a legendary film personality is an inspiring story of talent, resilience, and dedication.

Early Beginnings in Theatre

ANR began his artistic career at the young age of 10, performing in stage plays, often portraying female characters. His film debut came in 1941 with Dharmapatni, which marked the beginning of a prolific career spanning over seven decades. With 256 films to his credit in Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi, ANR showcased unmatched versatility, earning the admiration of audiences across India.

Contributions to Indian Cinema

ANR was more than an actor—he was a pioneer and visionary. His ability to portray a wide range of characters made him one of the most respected figures in Indian cinema. Beyond his on-screen brilliance, he played a pivotal role in the development of the Telugu film industry.

Founding Annapurna Studios

In 1976, ANR established Annapurna Studios in Hyderabad, a landmark moment that shifted the Telugu film industry from Chennai to its home state of Andhra Pradesh. This move laid the foundation for the industry’s long-term growth and accessibility.
