A Spiritual Guide and Social Reformer

Anand Rishiji Maharaj (1900–1992) was a revered spiritual leader whose life exemplified the deep connection between religion, social service, and education in Indian society. His contributions extended beyond spiritual teachings to meaningful work in education, healthcare, and humanitarian service.

Early Life and Spiritual Inclination

Born as Nemichand in the Ahmednagar district, he showed a deep interest in bhajans, kirtans, and religious discourses from an early age. The loss of his father during childhood further strengthened his inclination toward spirituality and introspection.

At a time when most youths followed conventional family life, he chose the path of brahmacharya (celibacy) and spiritual pursuit. At the age of 13, he was initiated by Ratan Rishiji Maharaj, formally dedicating his life to spiritual discipline and service.

Knowledge and Teachings

Anand Rishiji Maharaj was a scholar of:

  • Jain scriptures
  • Ancient Sanskrit philosophical texts

He was proficient in nine languages and wrote extensively in Marathi and Hindi. His teachings emphasized:

  • Love and compassion
  • Non-violence (Ahimsa)
  • Tolerance and harmony
  • The importance of spiritual awareness through knowledge

He believed that true knowledge leads the soul on the right path, preventing moral and spiritual decline.

Contributions to Society

Anand Rishiji Maharaj combined spirituality with practical service. He founded and supported numerous institutions, including:

  • Shri Ratna Jain Pustakalaya – a center for knowledge and learning
  • Shri Trilok Jain Vidyalaya – an educational institution
  • Shri Amol Sidhantshala at Pathardi
  • A blood bank at Poona Hospital
  • Anand Pratishthan – a humanitarian organization in Pune

He also revitalized struggling institutions and started publications to spread spiritual awareness.

Recognition

In recognition of his spiritual stature and service to society, he was conferred the title of ‘Acharya’ in 1965.

Legacy

Anand Rishiji Maharaj’s life reflects the ideal of practical spirituality—where religious wisdom is used to uplift society and alleviate human suffering. His efforts in education, healthcare, and spiritual guidance continue to inspire generations.

To honour his legacy, India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp, celebrating his enduring contributions to spirituality and social welfare.
