A Legacy of Education and Nationalism
Anglo Bengali Inter College, established in the late 19th century, stands as a remarkable example of how a modest initiative can evolve into a prestigious institution. Founded to serve the Bengali-speaking community of Allahabad, it gradually developed into a cosmopolitan centre of learning with a strong nationalist spirit.
Origins and Growth
The roots of the institution lie in the efforts of the Bengal Educational Society, formed in 1875 by visionaries like Sital Prasad Gupta and Madhu Sudan Moitra. Initially established as a small Bengali School with a single teacher and a few students, it steadily expanded over the years.
With the introduction of English education, it was renamed Anglo Bengali School, later becoming Anglo Bengali High School and eventually Anglo Bengali Inter College. The institution was affiliated to the University of Calcutta in 1887. Its own building was constructed in 1894, and it received recognition from the U.P. Board of High School and Intermediate Education in 1926.
Role in the Freedom Movement
The college became a hub of nationalist activities during India’s struggle for independence. Its students actively participated in the movement against colonial rule, reflecting strong patriotic values. The British authorities even withdrew grants to the institution at one point due to its nationalist stance.
A significant moment in its history was the visit of Subhas Chandra Bose in 1939, when he was given a grand and enthusiastic reception by the college community.
Post-Independence Excellence
After independence, Anglo Bengali Inter College continued to flourish as one of the leading educational institutions in India. Its students have consistently performed well in academic examinations, frequently appearing in merit lists of the state board.
The institution’s alumni have made significant contributions across diverse fields, reinforcing its reputation as a centre of excellence.
Commemorative Stamp
Recognizing its historical importance and contribution to education, India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp in honour of Anglo Bengali Inter College, Allahabad.
Conclusion
From a humble beginning to becoming a symbol of academic excellence and national pride, Anglo Bengali Inter College exemplifies the transformative power of education. Its legacy continues to inspire generations of students and educators alike.
