Fifty Years of Dedicated Service to the Nation
Introduction
The Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune is a premier tri-services medical institution established by the Ministry of Defence to build medical and nursing manpower for the Indian Armed Forces. The institution provides comprehensive medical education and training to undergraduate and postgraduate medical, nursing and paramedical cadets, officers and personnel of the Armed Forces, as well as those from friendly foreign countries, to meet the healthcare needs of service personnel and their families.
Establishment and Growth
AFMC was established on 1st May 1948 through an Act of Parliament, initially as a centre for postgraduate medical studies. The Undergraduate Wing was added in 1962, marking a significant milestone in its academic journey. The year 2012 witnessed the celebration of the Golden Jubilee of the Undergraduate Wing on 4th August.
Over the decades, the institution has expanded significantly and today comprises Undergraduate, Postgraduate, Paramedical Wings and a College of Nursing, reflecting its comprehensive approach to medical education and training.
Affiliated Hospitals and Clinical Facilities
The College is supported by four major affiliated hospitals:
- Command Hospital, Southern Command
- Military Hospital, Cardio Thoracic Centre
- Military Hospital, Kirkee
- Artificial Limb Centre
These hospitals are multi-speciality tertiary care institutions with advanced facilities and specialised competencies, providing excellent clinical exposure and hands-on training to students and faculty.
Campus and Infrastructure
Spread across 181 acres, the AFMC campus blends heritage and ultra-modern architecture, set amidst landscaped parks, sports fields and tree-lined pathways. The College provides 100% residential accommodation for students and faculty.
The campus includes two well-equipped auditoriums with seating capacities of 1000 and 350, used for academic, cultural and recreational activities. The Ashok Chakra Library houses an extensive collection of books and subscribes to leading national and international journals. It also features a modern e-library with forty computer terminals.
Academic Excellence and Admissions
Admission to the MBBS programme is conducted through an All India Open Entrance Examination. Additionally, ten MBBS seats are reserved for nominees from foreign governments through the Ministry of External Affairs.
Postgraduate education is imparted to over 350 Medical and Dental officers across 32 different specialities. AFMC continuously updates its teaching methodologies and curriculum to remain contemporary and forward-looking in medical education.
Research and Publications
AFMC plays an active role in medical research, with annual funding support from the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) for collaborative projects with national and international institutions. Undergraduate students are also encouraged to participate in research activities. The faculty has contributed extensively through the publication of research papers, books and training manuals, enhancing the institution’s academic reputation.
Holistic Development and Extracurricular Activities
The College emphasizes the overall development of its students. Along with academic excellence, students are encouraged to nurture their talents through participation in sports, cultural and extracurricular activities. AFMC students consistently achieve distinction in inter-collegiate and inter-university competitions, reflecting the institution’s balanced educational ethos.
