The Army Post Office (APO) has played a crucial role in facilitating communication and postal services for the armed forces in India. Initially, the Army ran its own postal agency, which later integrated with the civil postal network. The earliest known Army postal agency dates back to the “Meywar Field Force” in 1818, operating until around 1840. The first regular Army Post Office was established in 1856, specifically for the Persian Expedition, stationed in Bushire (Iran).

Throughout history, Army Post Offices have operated in various campaigns across Europe, Africa, and Asia, including both World Wars. They have also provided postal services during peacekeeping missions in regions such as the Korean Peninsula, Indo-China, Gaza, and Congo. In recognition of their exceptional service, the Indian Government has established them as a distinct and separate Corps within the Indian Army.

Although organizationally part of the Army, Army Post Offices function as regular post offices of the Indian Posts and Telegraphs Department, catering to all postal needs. The issuance of a special postage stamp commemorating the Army Post Office acknowledges their vital contribution to communication and postal services, particularly in military operations and peacekeeping missions.
